Venice and Cannes-selected director Diego Lerman (Refugiado) brings us A SORT OF FAMILY, an intense road-movie with an impressive performance by Goya® Award-winner Bárbara Lennie (Magical Girl).
Malena is a successful doctor about to hit middle-age who receives a call that will change her life: the baby she adopted is about to be born. She goes to retrieve him from his surrogate mother only to find herself blackmailed by the newborn’s biological parents: either Malena pays more money or they’ll put the baby in an orphanage. And the law is on their side. Even still, Malena takes the challenge and sets out on an uncertain journey plagued by moral and legal dilemmas to see how far she is willing to go to get what she wants most.
"A rewarding, well-crafted and accessible piece". Jonathan Holland. The Hollywood Reporter.
"The whole film is shrouded in an atmosphere of Greek tragedy, in which the vivid colours of certain scenes are combined with a completely deus ex machina moment that is shocking on account of its sheer abruptness". Alfonso Rivera. Cineuropa.
